Today was our first day of 21 Days of Prayer as we get ready to enter the fall season at New Life Fellowship. We are excited about what God is going to do in our church this season, but we are also excited about what He is getting ready to do in your life personally! God is never done doing new and miraculous things in your life. As long as their is breath in your body, He has purposed your life for greater things. The best is yet to come!
I'm reminded of the story of Israel and Gideon when I think of what God wants to do in your life and the life of our church. However, when God called Gideon out, this was his response.
The angel of the lord appeared to him and said, "Mighty hero, the lord is with you!" Then the lord turned to him and said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!” “But Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!”Judges 6:12, 14-15 NLT
Gideon's view of himself disqualified him for what God wanted to do. This is our story many times. We look at our past, our families and even our current circumstance and miss out on the bigger story and picture that God wants to unfold.
Our challenge to you as we continue on these 21 Days of Prayer is that you would take your eyes off of the smaller story (your current life circumstances) and fix your heart and ears on the bigger story that God is speaking into your spirit.
This is a detail that we don't often miss in the story of Gideon. Every preacher and their mother has preached about the importance of your identity based on Gideon's experience.
The details that we do forget is that long before the victory was given to Gideon, he was given some things to do. He had to break down the alters of false gods and Asherah poles. He was told to build an altar to God and make a sacrifice. God told him to call the armies of Israel, then had him send most of them home. God even had him spy on the enemy camp to build his faith and courage for the battle. In all of this Gideon was obedient.
In the middle of following God's instructions the Bible says that, "Then the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon with power."
We want to encourage you to come out of prayer with instruction and faith to do the small things that God has asked you to do right now. He promises power when we are obedient in the process. He promises victory when we continue to walk in faith and obedience. Had Gideon given up and stopped following God's instruction in the middle of this process, he would've missed out on the miracle.
Don't stop. Don't give up. God is setting you up for something great at the end of these 21 days!
Here is what you can expect during these 21 Days of Prayer.
- GOD'S PART: He will call you by name (Judges 6:12). YOUR PART: Accept your new name.
- GOD'S PART: He will give you instruction (Judges 6:14, 25, 7:2-11). YOUR PART: Obey him.
- GOD'S PART: He will give you power (Judges 6:34, 7:9-15). YOUR PART: Receive power.
- GOD'S PART: He will perform the miracle (Judges 7:19-25) YOUR PART: Worship God.
